Frequently asked questions about Riding Gloves

Why wear riding gloves?

Riding gloves are amongst the most important items of clothing in equestrian sport. When working with the horse, dangerous situations can occur from time to time which can frighten the horse. It is not uncommon for the horse to jump out of the way and tear the rope, reins or lunge from your hand. That is why it is advisable to make gloves your constant companion. They ensure a firm grip and give the best possible hold. There are different designs, types and even different models for the changing seasons.

Which riding gloves are the best?

It is essential that the riding gloves fit and that the right size is worn. In the end, the role of quality plays an important role. Riding gloves made of real leather, imitation leather, cotton or synthetic are recommended. Above all, value should be placed on good workmanship. The seams should be well made and the fabric should not have any holes. There are models starting at 20€, which have a high durability when used frequently.

Can you wash riding gloves?

Leather gloves are not suitable for the washing machine. It is recommended to clean them with lukewarm water and a cloth. Once the leather gloves are cleaned, hang them up to dry in an airy place. Gloves made of imitation leather are not as sensitive and can be washed in the washing machine, although it is advisable to follow the care instructions. Fabric softener should preferably be avoided. There are riding gloves made of imitation leather that are not suitable for machine washing. They should only be washed by hand with a mild soap.

What size riding gloves to choose?

To determine the correct size for riding gloves, a measuring tape must be placed below the balls of the hands and minimally above the base of the thumb. This allows you to measure the circumference. The international sizes can be found in the size charts of our brand manufacturers. If you are unsure about the size, our customer service is available to answer your questions.

Do riding gloves need to be impregnated?

Riding gloves made of real leather do not require any impregnation, but they should be treated with a special leather care product. Softshell or synthetic leather materials are generally impregnated when they are new. After a certain period of wear, if they become permeable to water, they can be impregnated again. A commercially available impregnation spray is suitable for this purpose.

What do you have to look out for when buying?

Generally, it is important to make sure that the glove fits properly. It is therefore essential to be able to close the glove after putting it on without bruising or pressure. Gloves without a closure must also be comfortable to wear in order to fit properly. It is also recommended to do movement tests during the fitting. Spread your hands, clench them into fists and interlock your fingers. If you notice that there is tension, the glove is too small or too tight. In this case, it is better to choose a larger size so that you can maintain the right grip and hold during sports.

Which riding gloves are the right choice?

First and foremost, the season in which the gloves are worn should be taken into account. There are special winter or summer riding gloves, alternatively also all-year gloves. For the cold months, especially gloves made of several layers are suitable, which offer ultimate protection against cold and wind. Materials such as fleece or leather are suitable for this. This makes the gloves the perfect companion for the cold winter days in the stable. In summer, it is a good idea to wear gloves made of breathable, thin and soft materials. This regulates perspiration and ensures a secure grip on the reins or lunge.

More comfort and safety while riding

Equestrian sports are dynamic, as well as demanding. The reins can rub against the rider’s hands if the horse pulls too hard or becomes frightened. If the reins have become wet at these moments due to rain or the horse’s perspiration, they can slip unintentionally. They might slip out of the rider's hands so that she or he will no longer be able to keep control of the horse. From time to time, these situations can result in injuries to the rider: hands can be torn open or chafed, or in the worst case, a rider can be thrown from the horse. And then, of course, there is also the possibility that the horse will get hurt. For example, when the reins are released and the horse steps on them.

High-quality gloves are therefore important as they increase the dependability of the interactions during riding. Whether it's holding the whip or getting a firm grip on the reins after they’ve become soaked through with perspiration from the horse. For personal safety reasons, it is very important to wear sturdy gloves when riding in rough terrain. The reins can slip from the rider’s hands or unintentionally become twisted more quickly than during a calm ride on smoother ground. Both rider and horse benefit equally from the increased safety that quality riding gloves provide.

Riding glove characteristics

Generally, gloves for riding are a little more close-fitting. They are made of flexible material to ensure the requisite freedom of movement. This way, you won't be hindered by any restrictions during your ride. To provide the palms of your hands with particularly effective protection against the reins, high-quality riding gloves are often lined inside with leather, imitation leather, nubs or a similar, strong material. Some pairs have an integrated Velcro closure that makes them easier to put on and take off while providing a tight fit. The products we offer are made of soft materials on the inside, so they always score well as far as wearing comfort is concerned. Your hands won't sweat thanks to the breathable of the riding gloves in our range.

Riding gloves for every occasion

Please consider the following points:

  • Models suited for the stable will be sturdily manufactured using warmer linings. These can be used in daily work in the stable, since they can stand a higher load. Good stable gloves are watertight and can be closed tightly at the cuffs.

  • Winter riding gloves can also withstand very low temperatures. The additional lining ensures pleasant wearing comfort. Winter riding gloves thus guarantee a steady hand in the saddle during the colder months, as well as providing for the rider’s well-being at the same time. On the other hand, riding gloves for summer tend to be lighter and airier. Of course, FUNDIS carries pairs that can be worn throughout the year.

  • For equestrian disciplines such as dressage, well-known manufacturers offer designs with a special look to round off any charming outfit. Riding gloves like these will go perfectly with riding breeches, riding shirts or tailcoats. For dressage, somewhat less sturdy white designs are usually chosen, but they still provide effective protection for the hands, so the rider has a firm grip on the reins and the riding whip.

  • We have riding gloves made of leather as well as cotton in our offer. Items manufactured from breathable bi-elastic spandex complete the range. Our online shop also offers thin perforated gloves made of lambskin-leather, buckskin and lycra with Swarovski stones and glitter. These are particularly refined, elegant designs.

  • Leading brands ensure optimum quality and look: The famous riding gloves by Roeckl are known for their particular durability. Bi-elastic spandex as well as integrated PU artificial leather lend the gloves by Roeckl an especially robust and elastic character.
