Effect and principle of the horse martingale
- The effect and principle of the martingale are simple: if your horse pulls his head up to escape the rein aids, the rein will bend at the martingale rings, which stops the upward movement.
- The horse martingale is often found in show jumping, cross-country riding or when breaking in young horses. It is used, for example, with horses that bang their head or push it up. Although the head banging is not prevented, the unwanted impetuous behaviour of the animal can be restricted. This means that the aids can regulate the movement. This way, riders can enjoy their sport more safely because the risk of injury from sudden movements is reduced by the minimisation of head banging.
- Beginning riders also benefit from auxiliary reins: experienced trainers know about the gentle effect of the martingale, they like to use it when teaching beginners.
Pay attention to the buckling of the horse martingale
It is important to buckle the horse martingale correctly so that the aids work and really limit the animal's head banging. A correct installation of the auxiliary reins can be recognised by the fact that when the horse's head is relaxed, the line of the rein runs straight and unbroken from the horse's mouth to the rider's hand. The regulating effect of a martingale may only become apparent when the horse moves its head to unwanted heights or when the rider raises his hands too high. For this reason, a martingale should be buckled in such a way that it slackens when the reins are correctly held.
Combination with the breast collar
Sometimes the breast collar is confused with the martingale. However, both aids are applied differently, although they are often combined with each other. In contrast to the horse martingale, the breast collar is connected to the saddle and can be adjusted in the area of the horse's neck. Just like the martingale, it contributes to more safety when riding.
